Poverty rate significantly declines in Iraq

The Iraqi Ministry of Planning said on Sunday that the recently conducted economic and social survey showed a significant decrease in poverty and unemployment rates in the country.

In July 2023, the Iraqi Planning Ministry began conducting an economic and social survey of Iraqi households, assessing unemployment, poverty, and wellbeing across the country, according to the spokesperson of the Iraqi Planning Ministry, Abdul Zahra Al-Hindawi.

Al-Hindawi explained that the unemployment rate in Iraq decreased from 16.5 percent to 14.4 percent, while poverty decreased from 23 percent to 17.6 percent.

The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, said last week that the measures taken by the government contributed to reducing the unemployment rate in the country.

The Iraqi government addressed the unemployment issue by creating opportunities for hundreds of thousands of higher education graduates, according to Al-Sudani.

The unemployment rate in Iraq remains a serious source for worry, having increased to 15.6 percent in 2023. This is a notable rise in comparison to the long-term average of about 10.01 percent since 1991.

Many young people are unhappy with government efforts to generate job opportunities, which might lead to a loss of skills and increased immigration.

Lack of private sector employment exacerbates this issue because many fresh graduates find it difficult to find employment in Iraq and may seek employment abroad.

Even though unemployment is a challenging issue in Iraq, particularly for young people, there are ongoing discussions about the necessary reforms and steps that may help alleviate this urgent problem.
