Iraq, Syria call for stopping Israel’s attacks on Lebanon, Gaza

The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, and the Syrian President, Bashar Al-Assad, emphasized on Monday the importance of coordinating views during the summit to stop Israel’s continued assaults on Gaza and Lebanon.

The two leaders met in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, on the sidelines of their participation in the Arab-Islamic summit held to discuss the Israeli aggression on Gaza and Lebanon, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

The meeting addressed strategies to promote bilateral relations between the two countries in order to achieve the interests of the people in both countries.

The two sides urged major countries and international organizations to take responsibility for the crimes that Israeli troops have committed against civilians in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.

The second emergency summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Arab League began Monday in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, with 57 participating countries and a number of Arab leaders present.

Since Hamas declared the start of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood on October 7, 2023, Israel has continued to attack the Gaza Strip.

Since October 7, Israeli air and ground actions in the Gaza Strip have killed over 43,000 people and injured over 102,000 more.

In early October 2024, the Israeli army announced the launch of a small military assault in southern Lebanon, focusing on Hezbollah infrastructure and positions in a few of the neighboring municipalities.

Over 2,860 people have been killed and over 13,000 injured by Israeli bombings on Lebanon since the escalation started, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health.
