Iraq announces preliminary population census results
Iraq’s Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, unveiled the initial findings of the country’s latest population and housing census. This landmark initiative, supported by all political forces and constitutional authorities, highlights significant demographic and urbanization trends.
As of now, Iraq’s population, including the Kurdistan Region, stands at 45,407,895. The census revealed that 70.3% of Iraqis reside in urban areas, while rural areas account for 29.7%. The total number of households is approximately 7.9 million, with an average household size of 5.3 members.
Gender distribution is nearly balanced, with males representing 50.1% (22.78 million) and females 49.8%(22.62 million). Women lead 11.33% of households, whereas men lead 88.67%.
The age structure indicates that 36.1% of the population is under 15, while the working-age group (15–64 years) constitutes 60.2%. Notably, 3.7% of Iraqis are aged 65 and above, marking a demographic shift.
Housing data shows 8,037,221 residences, dominated by traditional houses (92.1%), followed by apartments (6.6%) and mudbrick homes (0.4%).
With a growth rate of 2.3%, Iraq is entering a “demographic dividend” phase, as 60% of its population is of working age. This census provides vital insights for policy planning and development initiatives across Iraq.
