Iraq to reopen Mosul International Airport in 2025

The spokesperson of the Iraqi Transport Ministry, Maitham Al-Safi, revealed on Saturday that Mosul International Airport is expected to be opened in 2025.

Al-Safi indicated that 86 percent of the airport’s rehabilitation process is finished.

In late October, the Iraqi Minister of Transport, Razzaq Al-Saadawi, said that the airport was built according to international specifications.

After undergoing extensive work to upgrade its runway and facilities, the airport reopened on December 2, 2007. In 1990, it was first established as a civil airport.

When the terrorist group ISIS took possession of the airport in June 2014, it became an important military location. They held it until February 23, 2017, when Iraqi troops reclaimed it.

Reports mentioned that terrorists sabotaged runways and equipment, causing significant damage to the airport during the ISIS occupation.

Renovation of Mosul International Airport began after it was liberated. De-mining operations were completed by November 2019, and preparations for a comprehensive reconstruction were started.

In December 2020, the Iraqi government signed agreements with Aeroports de Paris Ingenierie and SEA Milan Airports for the reconstruction of the airport.

The rehabilitation of the airport in northern Iraq is considered essential for improving regional connections and assisting in the local economy’s revival after years of conflict.

Additionally, the restoration of Mosul International Airport represents a major milestone in the recovery of Iraq’s transportation system and infrastructure, especially for the people of Nineveh governorate.
